Our April Italian Luncheon for Veterans In-Need will salute the heroic US and Allied Forces World War II Veterans who liberated Italy during the month of April 1945.
Thanks to donors in America, the Veterans will enjoy a full Italian Dinner and salute the Veterans who accomplished the following heroic acts.
As we work to provide luncheons and weekend meals for homeless veterans and veterans in reemployment programs, we ask you to also consider a donation to help these veterans reclaim their dignity with a donation by clicking here.
Heroic Accomplishments by Veterans Serving in Italy, April 1945:
April 9 – British 8th Army begins a massive offensive. The Germans are taken by surprise, and the British establish bridgeheads over the Senio River.
April 10 – US 92nd Infantry Division enters Massa in the Tuscany region.
April 14 – After multiple postponements due to bad weather, the US Fifth Army launched its final offensive of the war toward Bologna and are backed by the Italian Legnano Combat Group.
April 18 – US 10th Mountain Division captures around 3,000 German prisoners.
April 21 – Bologna is liberated by Polish and American troops, Italian combat forces, and partisans.
April 22 – US 85th Infantry Division’s 310th Engineer Battalion save a major Panaro River bridge from destruction, secure it, and repel German attempts to retake the bridge.
April 23 – Allied push to the Po River nets some 100,000 Axis prisoners.
April 24–26 – US Fifth Army reaches the Po River and split northern Italy Axis forces in two.
April 25 – 88th Infantry Division liberates Verona. Volunteer Corps for Freedom calls for a general uprising in northern Italy. Italian Resistance Movement meets with Mussolini and demand his unconditional surrender, but Mussolini does not surrender.
April 27 -92nd Infantry Division reaches Genoa.
April 28 – Mussolini and companions arrested and executed. Italian Resistance takes provisional power in northern Italy.
April 29 – German Army Group agrees to unconditional surrender of all German forces in Italy.
April 30 – It is reported that Adolf Hitler commits suicide in his bunker in Berlin.
All this in the span of one month…
