About Eartha Mary Magdalene White:
Miss White was a humanitarian and philanthropists who dedicated her life to the betterment of the poor and needy in Florida. She graduated from the Stanton School in Jacksonville and became a classically trained opera singer in New York around the turn of the century, before moving back to Florida to build the first public school for African Americans in Bayard. She started the Clara White mission which worked to feed and serve the poor and homeless community of Jacksonville as well as the Boy’s Improvement Club, Mercy Hospital and Oakland Park and many more community organizations. The Clara White Mission has continued to serve those in-need and offers hope to the homeless with reemployment programs. Located in the highly populated veteran community of Jacksonville, the Clara White Mission provides clean and welcoming facilities for Veterans to live while working toward permanent and independent living.
Eartha M. M. White named the Clara White Mission after her Mother Clara. The dream and work of the Mission has continued and expanded under the leadership of Ju’Coby Pittman, with a dedicated Staff and Volunteers throughout Northeast Florida.
Well done.
