Russell Geaney is a mentor and inspiration to veterans in need in Jacksonville. He served in Vietnam in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Hudson Valley Community College and took various courses at Boston University and Northeastern University. Russell was a Utility Surveyor and a small business owner. Mr. Greaney came to Florida after losing his job, his home, and prospects for employment in other states.
Russell entered the Homeless Veterans Transitional Housing Program at the Clara White Mission in Jacksonville. He became a mentor to others in the program and earned the respect and admiration of other veterans in need and the staff. Upon completing the program, Russell was hired in the Day Center of the Mission, where he meets homeless persons who are hungry, needy, and frequently without hope. He encourages, helps, befriends, and guides those in need to the very best of his ability. Mr. Greaney’s friendly but firm guidance and his example are an inspiration to not only survive but to succeed.
Recently, when the We Can Be Heroes President spoke with a group of homeless veterans at the Mission, the process to nominate Unsung Heroes was discussed. When the veterans were asked if they had an Unsung Hero, many of those present simultaneously pointed to Russell Greaney. The Foundation President confirms there is no better endorsement in Jacksonville than those who know firsthand.
Well done, Russell Geaney.
Update June 6, 2023: Russell Greaney was awarded the Jacksonville City Council Certificate of Commendation by Councilman Al Ferraro for his community service as a mentor to homeless veterans.
